RE: Securing TVs in travel

The TV sets that came with our trailer were strapped down by the Manufacturer by metal bands. When we swapped out the bedroom TV for an LCD model we just bolted the base to the dresser it sits on (I used wing nuts in case I need to remove it in a hurry though I don't know why I would). Camping World (and others) sell straps specifically made for strapping down a TV set but free to improvise.

RE: Will there be mobile rvs in ten years?

The months we spend on the road with our RV are among the least expensive times of the year for us. We are not off shopping or driving around and instead spend more time hiking and exploring new areas which is usually pretty inexpensive compared to some of our other entertainment choices. We have already started to plot our trip for next spring (Wisconsin to Naples Florida to the Grand Canyon and some of the other National Parks out there. We estimate that it will be about 8,000 mile and assuming diesel will be $5.00 a gallon we put the cost at around $3,500. So we just save for that cost like any other vacation (what does a week at Disney World cost nowadays? I admit that this is an expensive trip but this is our only "vice". I agree though that many will simply choose to get out a not drive so far. It wasn't that long ago that we thought $2.00 a gallon was expensive.

RE: Overnighting in a pull through site- stabs up or down?

We alway drop ours. They don't take that long to put down and help to reduce the bounce (especially when the DW goes potty at night ). It will also help level it up a bit.

RE: Dish Satellite Connection Confusion

I'll share what I learned with our new 626... We've found that if I point the dish according to the specs (AZ, El and Sk) and then run the Test Switch. It will often "find" the satellite. This is different from what we used to do (just sort of swing around until we hit the right spot). I'm not sure why this works (improved technology) but we've also noticed that once it "finds" the satellite it will stay locked better. You might also want to talk to your dealer about a new LNB and a signal combiner. We switched to a DishPlus Twin with a DishPro signal combiner and it lets us use both tuners so the DW can watch one program and I can watch a different one. I'm not sure whether or not you NEED to have both satellite dish inputs connected.

RE: Bathrooms not needed at campgrounds?

We rarely use the CG showers/restrooms. The DW explains that that was part of our motivation to abandon tent camping for trailer life -- not having to walk to the bathroom or shower and being able to take showers in a clean, private and uninterrupted place. We have found, in talking to other campers who have large units and are still using the showers is that the DW has taken over the shower for a closet???

RE: Improving the Ride

Like RollingrockTX says, you will get lots of suggestions most will involve spending a fair amount of money (which is probably worth it if is solves the problem). Break the problem into two parts, Pin box and Trailer Suspension, and do one each year. My answer was factory installed on our JayCo. They now use MOR/ryde products. Good Luck.

RE: finger print recognition

I would think of it more of a time-saver than a security enhancement. We have it (fingerprint recognition) on our newest laptop from HP (Vista). It starts with the "normal" logon/startup screen but allows you to log on by simply swiping my (or her) finger. It then logs on the account of the swipee . It then (at least the version we have) will upon being taught remember any other passwords you need as you log on to different web sites. Having said this, it does not eliminate or remove the ability to use passwords. When I need to access the DW's account I simply enter her password (which she has kindly provided me).

RE: banks won't finance full timers

Peoples Republic of China? . I know when we sold the house and bought the fifth wheel neither the dealer or our bank blinked. But then that was 3 year ago before the mortgage business got so "interesting". We don't really have a mortgage though it is more like an auto loan and we simply deduct the interest since it is for us a home loan. Our Bank (US Bank) actually has a whole division that specifically deals with RV/Marine loans and we have yet to have any trouble with them. Of course since they suck the money out of our checking account every month without a hitch I don't know what they would complain about. Shop around. Usually your dealer can track down a friendly lender for you.

RE: Rear Kitchen Gray Tank

Call me lazy but it seems to me a lot easier to just run the two sewer lines from my front and back drains, connect to the Y adapter and not have to flip switches etc. Guess I just never saw it as a problem.

RE: Future of XM radio

The problem will be, even if/when they merge, that your XM/Sirius receivers will not be able to receive the "other" signal. XM has an embedded base of GM owners and I know we get Sirius "for free" as part of our Dish network subscription. I agree though that I would like to XM get rid of the DJ's. It seems as if they are trying to recreate that old AM station feel which means they are missing the point of (supposedly) commercial free radio.

RE: Vista and Zone Alarm Firewall?

We just run AVG (plus windows protection). Check with ZoneAlarm though, they have just released a Vista compatible version.

RE: ARGH, Torn on a purchase, JT's or PlugitRight

I think your problem may be that if someone bought one system they would (hopefully) not have purchased a second system. All I can speak to is the JT system. I put them on our 35' fiver and found they did an excellent job of steadying our rockin' rig. The only time we feel much movement is when playing tennis on our WII . They were relatively simple to install and the company was very helpful in providing phone assistance and additional parts (at no charge) to help get the system operating.

RE: Dualie flat tire

All this leads to remembering to check both sets of rear tires to make sure one has not gone flat (while not under load) and you're running on only one good tire. The first time this happened to us I felt pretty stupid but realized then how easy it is to forget to at least thump the tires to see if they are both at least holding air.

RE: Stabilizers

We just installed the JT Strong Arms on our fifth wheel and found they really helped JT RV. We put them on the front and the back. It was a pretty straight forward install and the company was very helpful in answering questions.

RE: Satellite Set-up takes forever...

Maybe it has to do with where you are (Dish doesn't like CA )... Here in Illinois at our current CG using the dish pointing menu and our "align-a-site" dohicky we were pointed in about 2 minutes. The rigs on either side of us (with Direct TV) both gave up trying to find a signal, laid their tripods down and put up their Weingard antennas (no trees to speak of).

RE: Six hours and six beers later.......

We had NEXT DAY delivery. We didn't ask for it, it just worked out that way. No beer was involved. It was about 45 degrees out they day I put them on and was more interested in coffee or hot chocolate. I did have a nice chat with one of the people at JT about their instructions (they were trying to figure out why I ran out of some of the parts. Turns out it was a case of misinterpreting one section. They will re-write the section and were happy to send me the parts I needed to finish the job. One other suggestion would be to download the instructions from their web site http://www.jtrv.com/ and look them over that way you can call them and get any questions you might have resolved before you order.

RE: Six hours and six beers later.......

I had talked to the guys at JT before I installed ours and kidded them that the rear braces seemed pretty useless and that had thought about not bothering... They assured me that it would be worth the trouble (and they were much easier that the front). They were correct. The front braces stop the side to side and front to back on the front jacks so all the rear braces have to do is keep the back end from swaying side to side. It is always nice to find a product that works as promised.

RE: Rear Kitchen TT

We pulled a 27 RKS for a year and the only time we had any real trouble with the kitchen was when I took one wheel over a curb . We liked the way let us use the space. When we moved up a fiver we stayed with the rear kitchen and still have had no problems.

RE: Six hours and six beers later.......

I would second skip's endorsement. I installed them on our fiver last weekend and they really made a difference. Installation was easy. They (the support people at JT) were very helpful when I ran into some installation questions. The advise I picked up from this forum before trying the install was to read completely through the directions before starting and as Skip mentions, make sure you have the tools they list. The DW has been really impressed with the stability it gives us.

RE: propane tank won't completely empty

Do the tanks ever really get empty (as in nothing in them)? I always assumed it was due to the combination of things mentioned above (temperature, Change-over valve, opd) but never really thought it mattered much. When the red flag goes on it flip the valve over and fill the empty. This plan worked well until last weekend when I found that at the end of last season (May) I had apparently flipped he valve and not bothered to fill the tank and then this fall as we're "starting" up again found ourselves without propane at 5 AM . The DW loved kidding me about that senior moment.
